The
1st Devonport Scout Group, in the early days also known as the
3rd Auckland, was founded in 1908 and is one of the oldest Scout
Groups in New Zealand. At first, the troop met in a shed in
the garden of a house in Mozeley Avenue. In 1923, under the
leadership of AE Knowles, the troop built 'Scoutsville', the
Bach on Rangitoto Island which the group still owns today. From
1928-1939, the troop was based in the Bunker at the top of Mt
Victoria (now used by the Devonport Folk Music Club), and after
the Second World War moved to The Den in Allenby Avenue in 1946
- and have been there ever since. Devonport Scouts have been
serving the Devonport Community for over 100 years.
We
have all five scouting sections here at 1st Devonport. Our Kea
Club for 6-8 yr olds meets on Mondays 4-5pm. We have two Cub
Packs - the Victoria Pack, which meets on Mondays 5.30-7pm,
and the Flagstaff Pack, which meets on Wednesdays 5.30-7pm.
The Scout Troop meets on Thursdays from 6.30-8.30pm and the
Devonport Venturer Unit meets on Wednesdays 7.30pm. We also
have a crew of young leaders who make up the Devonport Rovers
who meet on an occasional basis. We now have around 80 youth
members in the group with currently a 2yr+ waiting list for
Keas and Cubs and a 4yr waiting list for scouts.
Our
Scout Den in Allenby Avenue is also available for hire, for
children' s parties and other such social events and is also
available for use by community groups, eg: yoga, meditation,
zumba, dance etc. Click here for further information on Den
Hire.
