The
1st Devonport Scout Group was founded in 1908 and is one of
the oldest Scout Groups in New Zealand. At first, the troop
met in a shed in the garden of a house in Mozeley Avenue. In
1923, under the leadership of AE Knowles, the troop built 'Scoutsville',
the Bach on Rangitoto Island which the group still owns today.
From 1928-1939, the troop was based in the Bunker at the top
of Mt Victoria (now used by the Folk Club), and after the Second
World War moved to The Den in Allenby Avenue in 1946 - and have
been there ever since. The Devonport Scout group has now served
the Devonport Community for over 100 years.
Having
nearly closed completely at the end of 2008, the 1st Devonport
Scout Group is now in a growth cycle. Our Cub Pack meets on
Mondays 5.30-7pm and our Kea Club for 6-8 yr olds meets on a
Monday 4-5pm. The Scout Troop restarted in April 2010 and meets
on Wednesday evenings from 6.30-8.30pm. Click here to read an
article all about it in the May 14th edition of the Devonport
Flagstaff
newspaper.
Our
Scout Den in Allenby Avenue is also available for hire, for
children' s parties and other such social events and is also
available for use by community groups. Click here for further
