The
Scout Bach on Rangitoto was built by the 1st Devonport Scout
group under Scoutmaster AE Knowles (NZ011) during the summer
of 1923-24 and was officially opened by the Deputy Mayor of
Devonport. It is nestled in a grove of pohutukawa trees just
up from the road to the crater, five minutes walk from Rangitoto
Wharf. Very much in the style of a tramping hut, the main room
is fitted out with triple-decker bunkbeds that can sleep around
12 people. The Bach has a kitchen with an LPG stove, but there
is no electricity, there are no toilets and water comes from
collecting rainwater from the roof! With permission from DOC,
we can use the public toilets by the wharf and collect drinking
water from there. As accommodation goes the Bach is, needless
to say, very rudimentary - but as no camping is allowed on Rangitoto
Island, this is one of the only places where you can stay overnight.
A rare privilege - and a great responsibility.
