Over
the years, Takarunga has accumulated a huge treasure trove of
equipment and resources for our children to work and play with.
From playdough and painting through to collage and carpentry,
there are opportunities for creative expression for all ages of
children. Our centre has been recently redesigned and rebuilt
and now has a library and quiet space, a babies room, new kitchen
and bathroom facilities and a resource room for the adults.
Outside,
we have plenty of space to run around in and our grounds are dotted
with native trees, including totara and pohutukawa. We have swings
and slides, two sandpits, a fort and a boat and our location gives
an ever changing panorama of interesting things to watch, study
and talk about.

A child's imagination knows no boundaries and when you take
part as a parent, you join the fun! At each session, we offer
a full range of equipment and areas of play: sand, collage,
dough, clay, family play, painting, water, junk, carpentry,
fingerpaint and messy play, music and movement, blocks and puzzles,
science and observation, fantasy play, books and storytelling,
physically active play.
Children
at Playcentre are given a lot of freedom to play, but always
within the three basic rules of Playcentre:
- respect
other people
- respect
the work and play of others
- respect
property and resources

Children
are free to initiate their own play, to choose the activity,
to work at their own pace and to take time to finish. They can
make friends and share their learning with others and gain knowledge
through play, participation and positive behaviour management.
As
adults we take an active role. We respect the children as learners,
help them form relationships with others, look and listen while
they play, support them when things go wrong, provide words
and ideas, nurture the creative process, encourage skill development,
and extend their learning when appropriate.
