Playcentre
is a national organization of parents co-operating together to
provide a quality early childhood experience for their children.
At Playcentre, the emphasis is on child-initiated play; through
helping and extending that play, parents become the first and
best educators of their children.
Playcentres
are run as family co-operatives. This means that we all share
in the running of the individual sessions and are also responsible
for the organization and administration of the centre. With families
sharing responsibilities and decision making, Playcentre brings
a sense of belonging and community.

|
Here,
a child will find:
- a
child-initiated programme based on what the individual child
needs and wants to be doing
- a
high adult to child ratio (1:3 or 1:4)
- a
huge variety of play opportunities
- a
safe and secure environment
- positive
interactions with other adults & children
- time
to discover and explore
- quality
equipment and resources
- the
opportunity to mix with children from 0 to school age, learning
from each other.
|
And
here a parent will find:
-
support
for themselves as parents
-
involvement
in their child's preschool experience
-
confidence
in themselves and their parenting
-
friendship
-
training
courses to develop parenting skills and understand child
development
-
challenges
-
time
for themselves
-
a sense of community & belonging

Adult
training is a vital part of Playcentre. Through on-going training
and workshops, we make sure we are able to offer quality sessions
for our children, based on the NZ Curriculum for Early Childhood
Centres, Te Whaariki. The training programme for adults
is vital, because the success of our sessions depends entirely
on the training and commitment of the adults.
Adults
are also offered workshops which are run at Playcentres all
over the North Shore. These focus on specific topics such
as areas of play and aim to increase knowledge, skills and
confidence. As parents, we are learning and gaining skills
too.

Playcentre
is unique. There is no other organisation for early childhood
education quite like it in the world. It
suits parents who want to be actively involved in working, growing,
learning and playing with their children, but it does require
a high level of time and commitment.
Playcentre
is committed to supporting bi-culturalism and protecting Maori
culture and heritage (tikanga Maori). At Takarunga, other
cultures are also celebrated as a number of our families hail
from other countries including Germany, Mexico, USA and the
UK.
